ENVIRONMENTAL Attribute COMMODITIES

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)

What is Renewable Energy Certificate RECs?

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) represent the environmental attributes of renewable energy generation and are used to track and verify the production and use of renewable energy. Each REC certifies that one megawatt-hour of electricity was generated from a renewable energy source and can be bought and sold independently of the electricity itself.

RECs provide a means to support and incentivize renewable energy development, as companies can purchase RECs to offset their carbon emissions and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. This allows renewable energy producers to generate additional revenue streams from the sale of their RECs, which can help to make their projects more financially viable.

The use of RECs is also a way to comply with renewable energy mandates and goals set by governments and other organizations, as they provide a means to demonstrate the use of renewable energy sources in meeting these targets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the criteria to be eligible to sell Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?
To qualify for selling Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), you need to generate electricity from recognized renewable sources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, biomass, or geothermal. This involves presenting various project documents, including regulatory approvals. Additionally, the seller must own the renewable energy system or the associated Environmental Attribute (EA).
How can Saxon Renewable assist me in selling my RECs and help generate profits for my renewable energy project?
Saxon Renewable facilitates the trading of renewable energy, leveraging its substantial trade volume, along with our market proficiency, industry networks, regulatory compliance guidance, and adept negotiation skills to ensure the successful sale of your RECs. We provide flexible options, offering either fixed-rate procurement of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) or a profit-sharing model tailored to suit the preferences of our clients.
Who will require or acquire RECs?
Organizations, businesses, or individuals committed to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility typically require or acquire Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). This includes companies aiming to offset their scope 2 carbon footprint, meet renewable energy targets, or demonstrate their commitment to clean energy. The purchase of RECs supports renewable energy generation and gives you the claim to the environmental benefits of the clean energy produced.
How can I Buy RECs from Saxon Renewables?
To get started, please provide the quantity of electricity in kWh that you wish to offset or specify the desired number of RECs needed. If you have preferences regarding renewable energy technology or REC vintage, kindly share that information with us. If you don't have specific details, our consultant will offer guidance based on your requirements. Operating across seven countries (Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, and Taiwan), we present a diverse range of REC products for your consideration. The delivery of RECs will be coordinated according to your specified timeline, and payment will only be made upon REC delivery.
Which RECs registries are used by Saxon to certify the REC?
We primarily utilize I-REC and APX-TIGR, globally recognized REC registries acknowledged by most governments, organizations, and global reporting standards. These registries play crucial roles in establishing transparent, standardized, and internationally recognized frameworks for tracking and trading renewable energy attributes.
What happens if I need the RECs from my renewable energy (RE) asset, and I have already sold them?
Many RE asset owners choose to sell unused RECs to generate additional profit until they need to use them in the future. In the event of a requirement, we can always provide the supply of RECs, which may be more affordable for your disclosure. You do not necessarily need the RECs generated from your own project to offset your scope 2 carbon emissions. There is also a popular strategy known as RECs arbitrage, where asset owners sell higher-priced RECs and purchase lower-priced RECs to meet their requirements while gaining economic benefits.
How can I disclose the renewable energy consumption from my own renewable energy asset to reduce my company's Scope 2 emissions?
As a best practice, you need to register your renewable energy asset in the REC registry, issue the RECs based on the generation data, and then go through the redemption process for your own company. The disclosure of the carbon emission reduction from the renewable energy can only be achieved through the redemption process.
How to value the RECs?
The current price of RECs is subject to fluctuations based on various factors such as supply and demand dynamics, global disclosure standards and requirements, geographical considerations, energy source quality, and the vintage of the RECs. These elements, along with market dynamics, play a significant role in determining the value of RECs, influencing negotiations between buyers and sellers in the renewable energy market.
